Warner Archive: Wartime Laughs In The Doughgirls (1944) and Pillow to Post (1945)
In a time where laughs didn't come easy, Hollywood found ample material for humor in the World War II era housing shortage. The mini-genre met with varying success, from the entertaining but laugh deficient Government Girl (1943) starring Olivia de Havilland to the bona-fide Frank Capra classic The More the Merrier (1943). Now available from Warner Archive, The Doughgirls (1944) and Pillow to Post (1945) fall somewhere between these two. They approach the scramble for housing with relentless good cheer and undoubtedly succeeded in raising wartime audience moral.
Pillow to Post is the least substantial of the two, but it is a consistently entertaining effort. With the exception of some icky sexual politics that could not be laughed off so easily today, it is never less than pleasant. Pre-noir Ida Lupino is endearing as the daughter of a wealthy oil-drilling equipment tycoon who wants to help the war effort by becoming a salesperson for her father.
Lupino hits the road, and finds she has a hard time being taken seriously. When she finally does make a sale at a company near a military base, it is on the condition that she go on a date with the executive making the buying decision. In typical 1940s fashion, this is approached lightly, but at least Lupino manages to keep her dignity and avoid being pawed.
While she is closing the deal the sleepless saleswoman needs a place to stay. After exhausting all her options, Lupino chances into an auto-court near the military base that is strictly for married couples. Desperate to get some sleep, she takes a room before producing a husband. A chance meeting with a helpful Lieutenant (William Prince) solves that problem when he agrees to pose as her spouse to secure the room, but leads to several more.
Of course Lupino and Prince butt heads a bit and then become fond of each other. They are a charming pair; not hilarious together, but amusing enough to make you smile. Though it turns out I've seen a few of Prince's films, I couldn't recall seeing him before and I enjoyed him here. He's one of those handsome, light-hearted actors who pinch-hit for the studio stars who went off to fight in the war. The actor would later thrive in a lengthy television career.
With an appealing pair of romantic leads and lots of activity at the auto-court, Pillow to Post could rate as a light entertainment, but there are a couple of unusual elements that elevate it to must-see for noir and music fans. The first is the fascinating novelty of seeing eternal villain Sydney Greenstreet in a comedy role. Though he is still plenty menacing as Prince's base commander, the actor gets a chance to be silly and it suits him. The other high point is a criminally brief appearance by 22-year-old Dorothy Dandridge in a nightclub scene with Louis Armstrong. Their bubbly rendition of Wat'cha Say? could have been slotted into most any other comedy of the age, and here it is a sublime moment in an otherwise mildly amusing film.
While it can be hit or miss in its chaotic pursuit of laughs, The Doughgirls benefits from bigger comic talents. It's got an enormous starring cast, with Ann Sheridan, Alexis Smith, and Jane Wyman as former showgirls, Jack Carson as a sexually, and otherwise, frustrated newlywed husband of the latter, Charlie Ruggles as his boss and Eve Arden as a Russian guerilla fighter. All of these people and more crowd into the Washington D.C. bridal suite of Wyman and Carson, most of them desperate for a place to stay.
There's never a moment to breathe as the characters scramble to fulfill their needs, which are inevitably at odds with just about everyone else. Wyman is equal parts amusing and irritating as the more boneheaded than blushing bride, but Ann Sheridan and Alexis Smith are sharp and hilariously entitled as her couch-surfing friends. The three of them were exhilarating to watch: slim, elegant, with perfectly groomed hair, nails like talons and impeccable suits, looking like they are outfitted for a war of their own which they are certain to win.
While the cast is uniformly good, Sheridan and Smith are the highlights here. They plunge into their roles with fearless comic glee, taking control of every situation and making certain they have a good time along the way. Sheridan is at her best when she's bold and confident like this, demonstrating that it is only a man's world in name. And why wasn't Smith given more comic roles? Maybe she had the features of the girl who would try to steal your boyfriend, but she had the chops to make people laugh and adore her much like Lombard. Though Eve Arden's Russian soldier speaks in that simple-minded idiotic way that every character with a foreign accent seemed to in classic Hollywood, I found myself laughing anyway. She practically insists that you humor her; I don't think this role would have worked with any other actress.
You get caught up in the energy of all that activity, and it is all helped along by a cast with great comic timing and chemistry.

We are lucky to have had Sharon Tate for the brief 27 years she lived. She hardly began to fulfill her potential before her death, but she never wasted a moment, quickly finding screen success and demonstrating a blooming comedic talent. The actress was also a remarkably kind soul, sometimes generous and humble to a fault. Her jaw dropping beauty was stunning in photographs, but more compelling in motion, where you could see the way she glowed with kindness, and how she was remarkably attentive to and respectful of the people in her orbit.
Now in a new biography, Ed Sanders explores Tate's life, in addition to the sinister events of her death. It's a quirky take on her story, but well researched and with several fascinating new interviews with friends and professional contacts.
In some respects, Sanders has a long history with Tate. He published The Family, his book about the Manson family murders, in 1971. He approached that publication, and this biography with the curiosity of a determined detective, drawing from his own contacts and using strong investigative skills to get closer to the truth. With this book, his diligence leads him to new theories about the reasons Manson ordered the murders, though it still remains impossible to be certain what actually happened.
The book is written as a sort of dual biography of Tate and her husband, director Roman Polanski, tracking both of their lives from an early age. I might have been more receptive to this approach if it had been presented as a dual story, but as it is, it feels like a distraction from Tate. I thought perhaps it was necessary to take up Polanski's story at such an early age in order to have enough information to fill a book , as this isn't the only time the narrative feels padded as a way to compensate for the few years Tate lived.
Of course, Polanski did play a significant role in Tate's life, and here he is shown to be deeply in love with the actress, but also controlling of her and unwilling to show sensitivity to her concerns about his promiscuity. It is through this relationship that she can be best understood, as the actress was completely focused on making the director happy, not entirely unaware of her own needs, but making her husband a priority. Sanders also describes her other relationships, including significant romances with actor Richard Beymer and Philippe Forquet and she clearly was drawn to controlling men.
The book focuses mostly on Tate's personal life, though it does go into detail about her fast rise to fame. While she was so beautiful that a certain amount of success was guaranteed her, the actress worked hard to learn her craft, and within a few years she had become an accomplished performer. There isn't much here about what specifically made her an appealing screen presence, but you can see how while some things came easily to Tate, she made certain she earned her success and made movies that would make her parents proud of her. It is bittersweet that she never got to hear her father's praise about her performance in The Wrecking Crew (1968); he watched the film the night she was murdered, and left the theater with plans to call to congratulate her the next day.
Sanders has an unusual take on the English language, using words like "stunningness", "unsureness" and "rebegan". Whenever an event in Tate's life seems to foreshadow her violent end, he is fond of ending the paragraph with "oo-ee-oo", which I imagine you are supposed to imagine him saying under his breath. You often sense his presence in the narrative, as if you are watching him at work.
After taking a look at Sanders' own bio. on Wikipedia I'm guessing he's a bit of a character and is letting his personality come through in the text. I can respect that this "poet, singer, social activist, environmentalist, author, publisher and longtime member of the band The Fugs," who has "been called a bridge between the Beat and Hippie generations" and is "considered to have been active and "present at the counterculture's creation" is marching to the beat of his own drum, and perhaps trying to liven up the sometimes unimaginative biography genre, but I felt it distracted from Tate to put so much of his own personality into her story. I can explain it best by sharing my typical comment to chatty movie audience members: "I didn't pay admission to listen to you talk buddy."
These quirks almost entirely disappear when Sanders begins to tell the story behind Tate's death, and as a result, the text becomes much more compelling. He is compassionate in his exploration of Tate's horrific last night and the LaBianca murders that would follow. The author even warns readers when he gets to the graphic material, suggesting that some may wish to skip the rest of the chapter. I was appreciative of that, because it made me stop a moment to reflect, and I realized I'd rather not have those details on my mind the rest of my life.
I picked up the story again after the night of the murder, and didn't feel like I missed anything I needed to understand the impact of what happened. While I was glad I skipped the recounting of the murders, there was still plenty of disturbing information about the aftermath and the activities of the Manson family throughout this period. It isn't an easy read.
The first half of the book is satisfying in itself as a chronicle of Tate's life and career, but there is a lot of suffering in the final chapters. More sensitive readers may wish to skip the book entirely. Devoted fans will find plenty to interest them in the early chapters.

RIP 2015: In Remembrance and Gratitude
It can be heartwrenching to be a classic movie fan. So many of the stars you love are gone, and you must say goodbye to more every year. It makes you even more grateful for any connection you may make with them, be it a signed photo, a public appearance, or even meeting face-to-face. I find it also makes me even more determined to spread the word about these amazing artists and ensure their legacy endures.
This year the losses were particularly poignant for me, because I'd actually seen three of them, Albert Maysles, Maureen O'Hara and film critic Richard Corliss, in person at TCM Classic Film Festival. O'Hara's interview with Robert Osborne was incredibly emotional and felt like a goodbye and a heartfelt "thank you" from both audience and star. Maysles was also clearly frail as he appeared before a screening of Grey Gardens (1975), though as like O'Hara, he was still as sharp and lucid as ever. I have to admit I didn't pay much attention to Corliss, after all, he was interviewing Margaret O'Brien, but I deeply respect his writing.
May all of these talented people rest in peace. I hope they all know how much pleasure they gave the world.
